Blaine From Hello, Disaster

This is the interview I did with Blaine from PVS

Me: Where did PVS get its name
from?

Blaine: We got the name from this kid in our
school. Bryan and I hate it. Anyway, theres was this kid in
our school named phillip...he always wore velcro shoes. He
was kind of a dork i guess you could say and we always
tried to talk to him but he'd always run away. We made it up
kind of as a joke, but we needed a name so it turned out that

way.
Me: What are your musical
insperations as well as the bands?
Blaine: My musical inspiratioins include bands
like At The Drive In, Dead Poetic, Refused, Poison The Well,
Thursday, and a lot of other punk bands. I would have to say
right now im really inspired by bands like Sparta and The
Used. My inspirations kind of contradict the music i play, but
its all well and good.
Me: What are your thoughts on the
new pop punk movement are these bands sell
outs, did the industry buy in, or is it a
combination of the two?
Blaine: I think people need to realize its just
music. A lot of people judge too fast, and too harshly. I like a
lot of these pop punk bands, but i hate a lot of them too. You
can't judge a band by what label they're on, or how much
money they make. But yes, i think there's a lot of demand
out there for something fresh and new. That "fresh, new"
thing, although its not very new, happens to be punk at the
moment. Things will fade away and another musical genre
will take the forefront eventually. It happens to all kinds of
music, sometimes it helps, sometimes it hurts. Just
because a band is pop punk doesn't mean you should hate
them and their fans, thats not being punk thats being
fascist.

Me: Do you feel that musicians these
days are more inclined to be business
musicians rather than create music that
might not produce a hit but shows who they
are creative wise?

Blaine: I think some are like that and some are
not...as to the business thing i think a lot more bands are
becoming business minded, doing things on their own DIY
style, and i think that helps. Sometimes, though, i think a lot
of artists can be come too industry minded and they stop
focusing on the real thing, which is the music...and once that
happens, you get your spot on TRL.
Me: What can we expect from PVS in
the future, a new album perhaps?

Blaine: Yeah, we're gonna try to get into the
studio pretty soon to work some stuff out. Our new cd
should show some of our growth as a band and we've got
some pretty cool stuff in store.  We've also got some shows
coming up and we're doing the Gathering Grounds new
years show with a few of our really good friends.

Me: Cool
Me: Are any of the members of PVS
expanding their horizons with a side project?
Blaine: Bryan and I are starting a hardcore band
with mike from surviving monday, and  jeremy from
crosstitch. We're currently looking at prospects for a rhythm
guitarist. It should be pretty rockin. We have yet to find a
name, but i'll let you know when we do.
Me: I heard you were signed to a label,
how is that working out for you?
Blaine: Citric Records its workin out
great.
Me: What are your thoughts on our
president George W Bush
Blaine: Well I can't speak for the whole band on
this one, but as for me i can't stand him. I don't like his
abuses of power, his wars, and his assault on our civil
liberties with homeland security. I could definitely do
without him.
Me:  Are there any ideas or
philosophies you try to get through to the
listeners in your music?

Blaine: I try to incorporate a lot of what i believe
in what i write. I'm kind of calming down with the political
content, but in our newer stuff i think you can see certain
things, like living life to the fullest, and not changing yourself
for other people.
Me: What's your favorite song to
perform live?
Blaine: my favorite song to perform live would
probably have to be either one of our new songs "Socialism
vs. RNC" or "Dear Megan". I love to play "Socialism" because
it just gives me a chance to go nuts on stage and scream my
heart out. I also love performing Dear Megan because it
means a lot to me. When i wrote that song i pretty much
went as deep down as i could, and poured out all i had.
Me: What's in your cd players right
now?
Blaine: good question.....Dead Poetic "Four Wall
Blackmail", Norma Jean "Bless the Martyr Kiss The Child"
Alkaline Trio's "From Here To Infirmary" and From Autumn
To Ashes "Too Bad Your Beautiful"
Me: Where do you see yourself in 20
years?
Blaine: That question i can't really answer. I try
to live life day to day as much as i can. Now that i think about
it, though, i would love to have a label.
Me: That's cool
Me: Do you like any of the older punk
that is out?
Blaine: Of course! I love a lot of the older Rancid
stuff, along with Operation Ivy, Minor Threat, Dead Kennedys,
stuff like that...thats how we started out, playin that old punk
stuff. I've moved on a lot, but I'll always love the old stuff.
Blaine: I also enjoy the numskulls a lot, haha.
Me: On the topic of Minor Threat,
what are your thoughts on the resurgence of
the straightedge movement in punk?
Blaine: I have mixed feelings on that a lot of the
time. I think if your straightedge thats awesome, keep doing
what your doing. But at the same time I've known some
straightedge kids to just pick out kids at shows and beat the
hell out of em. I don't support that at all. I definitely support
staying out of drugs, alcohol, and sex, if thats your decision.
Beating  people down, though, thats not cool.
Me: Blink 182 or MxPx and why?
Blaine: MxPx for the music, i like them a lot. I
saw them live this summer, they were great.
Me: NOFX or Bad Religion and why?
Blaine: hmmm now thats a thinker
Blaine: I would have to say Bad Religion,
because i really like a lot of their music more than i like
NOFX. I listen to NOFX when i wanna laugh, but for sheer
quality i like Bad Religion more. Although, I am a huge fan of
punkvoter.com run by Fat Mike. Great website.
Me: alright
Me: Who in the band is listens to the
wierdest music in terms of like different from
the rest of the band
Blaine: Greg
Me: what does he listen to?
Blaine: Greg listens to Phish, and lots of it. He's
going to a concer this February. We all listen to phish, but
greg...he really listens to phish
Me: Are public restrooms gross?
Blaine: It depends on what public restroom. Run
down gas stations=bad. Applebee's=good.

Me: Do you pee in the shower?
Blaine: Sure don't, i try to do that before i get in.
lol good question.
Me: I do what I can
Me: What are some of the top local
bands that are still in high school?
Blaine: There are a lot of great bands around
here still in high school.  Some of my fave's would have to
be Surviving Monday, Six Days Til Sunday, The Numskulls,
Felines and Doorstops...are Doug Says Hi still in high school?
Blaine: oh yeah, can't forget Shyftid in there as
well
Me: Yeah
Blaine: rockin, well Doug Says Hi rocks as well
Me: They are at GG this week just in
case you didn't know.
Blaine: with the adversaries
Me: With that I am going to close the
interview and thank you for your time.
Blaine: thanks
Blaine: oh...the doug says hi show at the
christian life center is on December 31st
Me: Thanks
Blaine: yeah theres a lot of bands
Blaine: rock on my friend
