5/10/03 - Randy's Basement
I think that this band kicks ass, now I know what you people are thinking...especially those kind souls over at daytonscene,
great another ass kissing review. Well this band made me realize why I like punk rock. It's about passion not perfection.
This band left a lot to be desired technically no doubt but they play punk rock not fucking Pink Floyd songs...although
that would be interesting. These guys flew through some originals which included two of my favorite songs of the moment
"Destroy the Mindslaves" and "In The Hands of a Greater Captain Crunch" The lyrics are cool, somewhere in the vein of Dead
Kennedys and Bad Religion with the music being the kind of punk rock your little sister would hate...and that is always a
plus. So all in all these guys get a 8.5 on the unofficial nevermentioned before or after this review cool shit-o-meter.

So, it was their first club show ever ... I was expecting a band slightly shaking from nerves. Well, I was wrong, these
guys were musically one of the tightest local bands I have seen ever. From the opening chors of their cover of American Jesus
I knew I was in for a treat, this band takes from pop/punk of yesteryear and adds their own hardcore tinges. Lesbo Love was
a prime example of this, it rocked the way bands like Minor Threat and Jawbox did but it had the melodic tendencies and background
vocals of a Screecing Weasel song. Speaking of Screeching Weasel the cover of Cool Kids these guys played may have won them
several of the modern pop/punk kids over. All in all I was thoroughly impressed with this band.

There are two kinds of great bands ... the kind who deliver and unyielding political message and the kind that have a
message but you still have a shit load of fun watching. Tonight I saw the second of the two, and I must admit I wouldn't trade
that kind for any other kind tonight. It is rare that young bands are able to work a crowd without coming off as lame, the
FiveNineties in all their glory have done this better than anyone. From the opening chords of Funeral to the finally shout
of Godzilla ... I got the second to last one, this band tore it up with their own brand of straight ahead punk rock ...with
a ton of melodic instincts. Screeching Weasel broke up a few years ago and The Queers have gone through as many lineups as
the Misfits. It is good to know that when the time comes to pass on the pop-punk legacy to this generation there will be a
band like the FiveNineties there to accept. Also, the crowd at this thing was amazing and I want to give a big thanks to everyone
for getting into it ... especially the Bottle Rockets.
